Acord, James Leroy

A small handmade "Secret Valentine" sent from James Acord to Janet Galore, on 9 February 2009, in an envelope.

Fragments of a draft letter, possibly mis-ordered, from James Acord to Janet Galore, c. 31 May 2002. Acord attempted to type this as an email to Janet, but had issues, and ended up sending these pages, many of which are written on the back of email correspondence printouts between him and James Flint, Tom Putnam, and Fred Moody.
Some of the topics noted in the handwritten pages include: (1) The Doghouse in Seattle, and some memories of it; (2) other Seattle locations that are gone, including the Ballard Smoke Shop; (3) his continued gun ownership; (4) life at the Starlight, a prostitute he liked, and some characters he met there; (5) his emotional challenges, and his pleasure drawing.

A handwritten letter from James Acord to Janet Galore, undated. This is on letterhead noting that "James L. Acord Is a member in Good Standing in the Art Martyrs Brigade." This letter concerns a companion letter draft that James Acord had difficulty getting into a typed form to send via email. This dates from around 31 May 2002, possibly early June.

An envelope with a scratched out address, with "Jim Photos to Keep UK 1999" written on the front and back. Acord also noted "Things to put on the wall — next residence."
Rather than photographs, this contains: (1) a letter from James Acord, under the "Art Martyrs Brigade" heading, to Janet Galore, c. 31 May 2002; (2) a rather jumbled draft letter on the back of printouts of emails with James Flint.

A postcard, undated, from James Acord while in London to [Push] Button [the Galores' cat] in Honolulu, HI. This mentions a grey cat that came and sat on James Acord's lap while at a rave at the Kensington Oval in London. The front of this postcard represents "The Cambridge Cat" by Thomas Gray.

An envelope addressed from James Acord at the Kalakala Foundation, Kodiak, AK, to Janet and Edward Galore in Seattle, WA, not dated, but likely from just after May 1998. This envelope has a note on the verso: "Galores, Post card I forgot to mail from London — to Button, actually, and I didn't find them until after Ed had left Alaska. Jim. See you soon!"
This contains: (1) the mentioned postcard, showing "The Cambridge Cat" on the recto, with a letter from Jim Acord to Push Button [the Galores' cat] on the verso; (2) a photograph dated May 1998, of Janet and Edward in front of a Baobab tree, with a note from Acord on the verso; (3) a ticket for the British premiere of "(R)eply, (E)rase, (C)opy" at the London Kennington Oval, 19–22 February 1998, with a note for [Push] Button on the face.

An index card with a note from James Acord and Eddie-the-Cat to Janet and Edward Galore, dated 26 June 1995. This note thanks them for a good visit, in which Acord was able to see the business Zombie where Janet and Linley Storm worked, and notes an enclosed supply sheet for small jars and bottles. Acord mentions that he will bring some Mercury on the following visit.

An envelope of materials sent from James Acord in Richland, WA, to Janet and Edward Galore in Seattle on 27 June 1994.

A color photocopy of a photocollage made by James Acord to advertise his new address in Richland, WA. This shows "BEFORE: Artist attempting multiple roles of home-owner, husband, son and normal-appearing member of a very straight community," a panorama of the street where his home was, and "AFTER: Artist, relieved of any semblance of normalcy, moves to no-nonsense working studio on edge of town," a panorama of the 1970 Saint Street studio, Hanford Nuclear Sculpture Works.
On the verso is a 5 October 1994 letter in pencil, noting that Acord is getting his studio set up and winterized.

This contains: (1) a color photocopy of photographs of Acord's house and studio in Richland, with a handwritten letter on the verso; (2) a photocopy of the article "Bombs Away!" by Richard Jerome and Mick Wiggins in The New York Times Magazine, 3 April 1994; (3) A photocopy of the cover of the American Nuclear Society newsletter of October 1994, with a comic of "clip 'n' send cards for Lockheed and Martin Marietta"; (4) a photocopy of the schedule of events on October 28th and 29th at the Hanford Museum of Science & History showing multiple talks by "Jim Acord, Nuclear Sculptor"; (5) a photocopy of William C. Bequette's 11 September 1994 article "Nuclear culture not just waste needs cleanup"; (6) an annotated photocopy of Acord's 10 and 25 August 1994 GTE telephone bills; (7) a photocopy of an excerpt from a letter by Mary Frye, published in the WSAC newsletter, with a comic; (8) a photocopy of two letters to the editor of the New York Times on the Integral Fast Reactor; (9) a photocopy of an article by Aviva L. Brandt titled "Hanford scientists decry shutdown of isotope facility"; (10) a photocopy of a 10 September 1994 letter from Wanda Munn to the members of the American Nuclear Society about Hanford's 50th anniversary; (11) a photocopy of an article by Bernard Gilbert titled "U. S. officials undervalue plutonium"; (12) a cover letter and resume from someone asking Acord for employment, with Acord's annotations.
